The second HDD (Drive1), has total capacities totalling about 78.17 GB, implying only about 2 GB used for formatting - much more believeable. This totals about 74.5 GB - am I to believe that over half a GB was used for formatting etc. These are TOTAL capacities, NOT available space. (This is the order shown in Disk Management)Īs can be seen, my NEW 80 GB HDD (Drive0) shows as having one partition of about 9.3 GB, and two partitions of about 32.6 GB. Why would the system assign a drive letter out of sequence onto another hard drive ? Guess what ? I assumed that the "phantom partition" labeled as the "D:" drive was on the first physical drive - IT ISN'T !! It is on the SECOND physical drive. I right clicked on My Computer, Computer Management (Local)>Storage>Disk Management. Make sure you have read my beginning post in this thread first. This takes me back to that "phantom" partition "D:", which I did NOT ask for and really wish wasn't there - it is only 1.9 GB and I have NO idea how or why it appeared or was created. 5.0) ? Or would you just use the "Rename" feature to call the partitions what I want them to be called ?

(WOW)ġ.) Why did the "system" suddenly insert an "extra" partition (now drive "D:"), so that I now have FOUR drive partitions on the first physical hard drive (when I only asked for three) ? NOTE: The WD utility reported that the partitions had been successfully created AS I had asked for !!Ģ.) Why is Drive "D:" called a "Local Disk" like the partitions on my second physical drive - while the others are listed as "drive01part#" ?ģ.) Have these problems arisen because I used the Western Digital utility ?Ĥ.) Must I start over and re-install WinXP Pro to get things straight ? Or can I use Partition Magic (ver. Which means about 0.7 GB for formatting etc. Here is what I GOT (what SHOWS in My Computer and the capacity of each): P-3: ~35 GB (expected to show as "Drive E:") P-2: ~35 GB (expected to show as "Drive D:") P-1: 10 GB (expected to show as "Drive C:") I ASKED for the following partitions when prepping the HDD with the WD utility: I used Western Digital's Disk Utility to prep the hard drive. But somewhere between prepping the new 80 GB hard drive and installing WinXP Pro, something weird happened with the system drives as they appear in My Computer. Well, WinXP seems to be installed and running OK for now. Some of you may have read my posts (under a different Topic title) about questions and problems with installing WinXP. OK, I didn't know whether this belonged in the Hardware or WinXP section, so I chose this one.
